Happy May Day!!!!!
May first has always been a special day in our family. In the past we would spend the days prior preparing flowers of one sort or another. Sometimes it was paper colored on by the tiny ones and cut into flower shapes and put in paper baskets to tape or hang on the doors of the widowed neighbors. As the years went on it became more elaborate, silk flowers in paper doilies hung on doorknobs. Eventually the process evolved into preparing fresh marigolds to deliver in painted clay pots. But the process was always the same. The kids would rise early, we would pull together all the flowers and begin our secret trek around the neighborhood. We would sneak up to the door of a widowed or elderly neighbor, place the basket of flowers on the door, ring the bell and hide to watch them receive their May Day basket. It was so fun. After a few years of it, many of the older women would plan on our arrival and wait for us. It was so much fun. And the neighbors enjoyed the special attention.
This year for May Day, a photo flower will have to do. Finals are still raging and there is no time for baskets. Most of the elderly neighbors are gone or moved away. It was a wonderful tradition we did for nearly 20 years. . . it has changed a bit, but it is a tradition I look forward to resurrecting someday!!!
In the meantime, Happy May Day and enjoy the virtual May Day Basket above!!!
